Toulon Voiles de Légende - Amerigo Vespucci

Spectacular sailboat by its height and its rich ornaments, it is named after the famous Italian navigator. The figurehead also represents this famous character.

Looks like a pirate

Launched in 1931, the ship has been built in order to look like a wooden warship in the early nineteenth century. Her two white stripes on black shell also remind lines guns. Her sail area is impressive with 2600 square meters. The sailboat keeps alive the old traditions: the sails are still in burlap and rope made of plant fibres.

The one who perseveres

The sailboat's motto is: "Not the one who starts, but whose perseveres." This motto reflects the purpose of the training ship for the training of future navy officers. With a permanent crew of 270 sailors, it can carry up to 150 trainees.

In 2006, 75 years after its commissioning, major maintenance work of the ship have been completed. The staysail mast was replaced using the craft know how of origin. The navigation bridge was modernized and equipped with GPS navigation systems and satellite transmissions. In 2012, she made her 77th training campaign. Each cruise instruction takes a different route: Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Eastern Atlantic, North or South America. The ship has also completed a world tour in 2002/2003.

This sailboat, amongst the most popular with old rigs fans, participates regularly in large gatherings. Already present at the call of the Tall Ships Race in Toulon, she signed her second participation.
